Getting A Good Night's Rest

Get the perfect night’s sleep

For most of us, life is demanding and busy. It can be difficult to take care of ourselves as we should, especially when it comes to getting proper rest. Here are a few tips to helping you get the perfect night’s sleep so you can take life on head-first!

Choosing the Right Mattress

When it comes to sleeping, we spend one-third of our lives in bed. So, it’s important to ensure that your mattress and box spring are quality to allow you to get a good nights sleep.

  • Look for a mattress that is comfortable and supportive of your spine.
  • Choose one that is flexible enough to adapt to your body’s shape.
  • Ideally, find a mattress that offers independent support for each sleeper.

Tip: Remember to replace your mattress every 8-12 years for proper support and comfort.

Choosing the Right Pillow

A pillow is just as important as a mattress for support of your neck and spine. Make sure that when you’re laying on your side your neck is level with your spine. When laying on your back, your spine should be able to maintain you spines “c” curvature.

The Right Position

Now that you have the right mattress and pillow do your best to sleep in a healthy, supportive position. Ideally, laying on your side or back is the best (avoid sleeping on your stomach).

When you’re laying on your back, place a pillow under your thighs to keep your knees bent. If on your side, place a pillow between your thighs to keep your pelvis in alignment.

How to Sleep Better

  • Avoid a heavy meal before bed.
  • Limit your caffeine intake throughout the day (coffee, tea, cola).
  • Reduce or avoid alcohol as it can disrupt your sleep pattern.
  • Don’t exercise within the last hour before you go to sleep.
  • Expose yourself to bright light as soon as you wake up to regulate your body’s natural biorhythm.
  • Incorporate bedtime routines such as soft music to help signal your body that it’s time for bed.
  • Avoid looking at the clock in the middle of the night as it can cause anxiety that will keep you awake even longer.
